Source: Newsbtc.com

Over the past 72 hours, bomb threats attempting to extort Bitcoin (BTC) from business owners and governmental agencies have taken the world by storm, affecting thousands across Canada, the U.S., and New Zealand. Although the threats have begun to recede from the limelight in the western world, the issue may only be getting started across the Pacific Ocean in Asia. Hong Kong Targeted By Bitcoin Bomb Threat According to an exclusive report from the South China Morning Post (SCMP), an English news outlet centered around Asia’s happenings, bomb threats requesting BTC have arrived in the inboxes of a number of Hong Kong firms. As Michael Gazeley, CEO of Network Box, burned the candle on both ends on Friday, he purportedly saw a foreboding message land in his business email, telling the SCMP that he was “shocked.” This message was, of course, a…

Another Day Another New Low For Crypto Markets

Another Day Another New Low For Crypto Markets
Source: Newsbtc.com

FOMO Moments Crypto markets dump to new lows again; Bitcoin Cash, SV, nearly dead, Litecoin surviving. As predicted yesterday crypto markets have dumped to a new low during intraday trading. A minor recovery during the week could not be sustained and total market capitalization has fallen to a new low of $101 billion a few hours ago. Bitcoin led the drop when it fell through support at $3,400 a couple of days ago and kept going back down to a new 2018 low of $3,205 at 22.00 UTC. A quick bounce took it back to $3,250 but Bitcoin is still at its cheapest price for 16 months. Needless to say Ethereum has also been smashed dropping to a low of $83 before recovering back to a very weak $85. The rest of the altcoins are all in pain during Asian…

Teen Bitcoin Millionaire: “Bitcoin is Pretty Much Dead”

Source: Newsbtc.com

One of the youngest cryptocurrency success stories has a rather bleak outlook for the leading digital asset, Bitcoin. Erik Finman became a millionaire in his teens by investing money that his grandmother had gifted him, starting as early as 2011. At the height of the Bitcoin bull market of 2017, Finman’s stack was worth an impressive $4 million. There is no indication just how much much of this he still holds, however. Erik Finman: Bitcoin and Litecoin Dying, Ether, BCH, and Zcash Show Promise Erik Finman hit headlines this January for his remarkable story. Starting in 2011, the then 12-year-old was buying cryptocurrency with some money his grandmother had given to him. Bakkt and Intercontinental Exchange CEOs Weigh in About Bakkt

Source: Newsbtc.com

Bakkt CEO, Kelly Loeffler, and the Intercontinental Exchange chairman, Jeff Sprecher, recently spoke to MIT Media Lab’s Michael Casey at CoinDesk’s Consensus: Invest Conference. The chat was broadcast via the “Inside the ICE House” podcast earlier today. The two CEO’s talked in depth about their plans for the much-anticipated Bakkt platform, including what makes it different to other products already out there today, and why it will only focus on Bitcoin to begin with. Will Bakkt’s Federally Regulated Price Discovery be Good for Bitcoin? The conversation between Loeffler, Sprecher, and Casey began with a simple enough question: Does price matter to you? Loeffler responded first that it made little difference to the use of digital assets what they were priced at. The CEO went on to muse about the future of crypto more generally, particularly set within the context of…

Following its recent period of instability, Bitcoin has now plunged to new 2018 lows and has sent the altcoin markets spiraling downwards. Today’s drop has led the overall cryptocurrency market capitalization down to $102 billion, a level not seen since August of 2017. CoinShares Exec: China Crypto Plan Could Make Dystopian Future a Reality

Source: Newsbtc.com

Bitcoin was designed in the wake of the 2008 global economic crisis as a way to take control over money away from central authorities such as governments, banks, and other traditional systems. The decentralized design could also prevent communist countries like China from establishing control over their citizen’s money. However, the very technology powering crypto may be arming central authorities with even more control over the population and their money, which CoinShares Chief Strategy Officer Meltem Dimirors says may “slowly” be making her “dystopian nightmares” a “reality.” Government Control Undermines Crypto’s Original Intention In a tweet this morning, CoinShares Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Treasury Meltem Demirors shared her fears that recent moves by governments like Venezuela and China, could be bringing her “dystopian nightmares” closer to “reality.” Related Reading | Venezuelan President Orders Banks to Adopt Petro Demirors…

Crypto ICO Price Continues to Fall, Likely Due to Growing Regulatory Pressure

Source: Newsbtc.com

Blockchain and crypto projects that raised millions of dollars via tokenized crowdfunding means are now lining up to return their capital to their original investors. Because apparently, they were not allowed to raise funds in the first place. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has gone after these startups for reportedly violating existing securities laws. The US regulator found irregularities in the way companies raised funds, mainly by approaching average Joes instead of sophisticated, accredited investors to raise capital. As a result, the commission issued heavy penalties against the accused blockchain projects, which include the order of returning funds to the investors. Read this and think through the implications. We called this publicly as soon as the Airfox and Paragon enforcement actions were announced. There are many more shoes to drop for this narrative. https://t.co/3cHtpmr0Ka — Travis Kling (@Travis_Kling) December 13,…

In their press release, Coinbase said that they “…will support deposits from both transparent and shielded addresses, but only support withdrawals to transparent addresses. In the future, we’ll explore support for withdrawals to shielded addresses in locations where it complies with local laws.” Coinbase also described the distinction between Zcash’s transparent and shielded transactions as analogous to the distinction between unencrypted HTTP and encrypted HTTPS. This is true. However, transparent addresses work just like Bitcoin and most other cryptocurrencies. As such, the analogy extends to every cryptocurrency that is without encryption to protect user privacy. We are happy to hear that Coinbase has committed to exploring support for withdrawals to…

Reinforcing the security of the Sapling MPC

The engineering and cryptography team at Zcash makes very large efforts to minimize risk. This is always a positive thing, but perhaps even more crucial when using very new cryptography. Auditing is an important tool for this. One of the auditors we hired is Mary Maller, a Ph.D. student of Sarah Meiklejohn and Jens Groth at University College London—and currently one of the leading experts in the world on zk-SNARKs. In this post we announce an independent proof of security by Mary for a crucial component in the Sapling upgrade: The MPC protocol that was used to generate the zk-SNARK parameters. The protocol was initially presented in a paper [BGM] of Sean Bowe, Ian Miers and I. Mary’s work gives us an additional independent data point that the MPC protocol and zk-SNARK we are using are provably secure. The zk-SNARK in Sapling was…

Essentially allowing visitors to the website to mine the cryptocurrency with the help of small piece of javascript code embedded on the blog or website. The algorithm is not very heavy or demanding and the mining process itself does not seem to be taking too much CPU resources (it is CPU only), so the computer remains responsive and working just fine as if it is not calculating anything. This is making it pretty interesting for owners of big websites with more visitors, especially visitors that stay longer, but also makes it easy for regular users that are not yet into cryptocurrencies to actually get into mining this new cryptocoin as it only requires you to…

It seems that BitMain is willing to extend its presence from just the ASIC mining market as the company is apparently releasing two new devices for miners that are essentially dedicated GPU miners. For now the devices dubbed G1 with 8x GeForce GTX 1060 GPUs and G2 with 8x Radeon RX570 GPUs are only listed on the Chinese website of the company with prices only in CNY. This means that they are most likely targeted initially for the Chinese miners market and may not be sold outside of the country. Inside the server like cases we are expecting to see mining versions of the GPUs being used as this is the way to go with such solutions intended for large scale mining operations and not for small home miners. As one would expect the devices are targeted at Ethereum (ETH)…

Cryptocurrency Market Cap Climbs Over $150 Billion

The past week has been a prime illustration of the way in which the cryptocurrency can move up and down both very quickly and by large margins. Last weekend, nearly all of the top digital currencies fell precipitously in value, some declining by as much as 50% in price over a span of just 24 to 48 hours. According to Coin Desk, the industry fell by about 25% overall during that time, and the fall started just after digital currencies had reached an all-time high. The quick sell-off had some analysts wondering if this was the beginning of a crash. And yet, just a few days later, the industry has regained much of that lost ground, growing by about $150 billion to reclaim some of the value which was lost. 17% Regained by Wednesday After the drop of about 25%,…

Howard Marks Issues a Mea Culpa on Bitcoin, But He’s Still Not Investing

Billionaire investor Howard Marks, who ignited a fierce backlash from cryptocurrency advocates after dubbing bitcoin a “fad” in July, has a had change of heart. Well, sort of. Photographer: Christopher Goodney/Bloomberg Bitcoin, in fact, boasts a key attribute that may spur the digital method of exchange to serve as an alternative to legal tenders and as a store of value in the years to come: the simple fact that people believe in it. “What bitcoin partisans have told me subsequently is that bitcoin should be thought of as a currency — a medium of exchange — not an investment asset,” the Oaktree Capital Group LLC co-chairman wrote in a client memo Thursday. There’s no obvious reason why government-issued fiat currencies are superior to digital currencies, he adds. “So my initial bottom line is that I see no reason why bitcoin…
