Waves Smart Accounts and Smart Assets

Source: Blog - Wavesplatform

The first release of smart contracts will focus on account controls, making Waves more secure, powerful and flexible.Unlike platforms such as Ethereum, Waves is taking a phased approach to its smart contract releases. The first iteration of smart contracts will be a non-Turing complete implementation that will make advanced business logic available, but without the vulnerabilities of fully Turing complete contracts. These will enable several forms of account controls, which will be accessible directly from the Waves client. So what kind of operations will it be possible to carry out with Waves’ smart accounts?Multi-sigOne of the first and likely most immediately popular use cases for Waves smart contracts will be multi-sig accounts. These will require two or more users to approve a transaction before a transfer is made. This is a hugely important security feature, and makes it possible for…

Designing the New Internet

Designing the New Internet
Source: Blog - Maidsafe.net

By Jim Collinson I first logged on to the internet back in the early days of the web. A hand-me-down computer from a programmer uncle meant that Christmas of ’94 was a revelation; a new frontier of knowledge opened up in-front of me. The sum of human understanding was being amassed, and was right at my fingertips: graphic design, politics, music, race car engineering… it was all there to be absorbed, pored over, discussed, contributed to. And that, to me, is the essence of the internet. A meeting of like minded individuals; teaching, learning, collaborating, trading, connecting, sharing. A place of science, of wonder, exploration, and unconstrained thought. A space where all information is equal, even information published by a teenager in a Scottish fishing town, hacking away on a cast-off 386. The internet took me to a career in…

Pillars of Decentralisation: Freedom of Speech

Beneath the message, a shared machineStatus’ key differentiator is that we build properly decentralised systems. In an age where the problems of not owning your own data are becoming increasingly obvious, our community has clear insight into, and control over, their interactions online. We have four key reasons for committing to decentralisation and the deep technical challenges it poses. Each of these four pillars will be explained in detail over the course of this series, starting with a fundamental human right.Freedom of SpeechFreedom of Speech, simply put, is about allowing anyone to enquire into or express their opinion on any given subject without fear of censorship, sanction or reprisal. It has a long history in the law, from Ancient Athens and Rome; to The Bill of Rights (1689) and the French Revolution (1789); to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which reads:“Everyone…

Why Waves is Best for Airdrops

Either will work, but only one was designed to do the job quickly and effectively. Which do you choose?Airdrops have become an important element of the crypto landscape and for good reason. By distributing small amounts of tokens to many different users for free, you instantly gain a very large potential userbase. These recipients will generally want to find out more about the project. They may become larger buyers in due course, as well as some of your first testers, end user, and advocates for the business. All of this can be gained in return for allocating a small proportion of your token supply in advance, plus the cost of airdropping them…

Siafunds TSO Outcome

The Siafunds Tokenized Securities Offering (TSO) concluded on Saturday morning. We sold 231 Siafunds at a price of $7,500 per Siafund. We have already hired one new core dev, Matt Sevey, and plan to hire two more in the coming weeks. This will double the size of our existing dev team. While we had hoped to sell more Siafunds in this offering, we recognize that today’s token sale environment is filled with regulatory uncertainty. Most projects have put their fundraising efforts on-hold until we have more clarity from our regulators. Today, most VCs are greatly preferring equity to tokens. With a team of three devs, Sia is one of the most actively developed projects in the cryptocurrency space, with one of…

Waves-NG: Speed, Capacity and a Bit of Blockchain for Dummies

The answer to the question “What is blockchain and how does it work?” is less than obvious to the majority of users. Masses of blockchain-related information is published daily. Most of this content tries to use accessible language, but ends up switching from layman’s terms to the Martian-like language of computing.Simple explanations can’t keep pace with the development of blockchain technology, including both its achievements and failures. Hence the average user remains puzzled: “First you say blockchain is cool, even couldn’t grasp its benefits for myself — and now you’re telling me there are issues!”Understanding of blockchain by users, financial and government institutions is heavily coloured by this mess of headlines, breeding fears and stereotypes. Before we explain what Waves-NG is and how it increases the network’s speed, we’ll make yet another attempt to make things clearer about what blockchain is and, putting…

Science fiction films and television shows are packed with mouthwatering examples of futuristic technology. Warp speed travel on the USS Enterprise, Stormtroopers riding speeder bikes on the planet Endor, psychic crime prevention systems employed by PreCrime, and intelligent androids aboard the USCSS Prometheus, just to name a few. But most of these same films also come up short when revealing the payment technology of the future. Outside of throwaway lines about credits or using rare commodities as barter, much of mainstream Sci-Fi ignores the limitless possibilities for how and why we pay for things in the future. Of course, some of what seems like futuristic technology is already coming to pass. We can now wave a smartwatch to pay for a Coca-Cola from a vending machine or for groceries in a checkout line. Apps allow us to split a restaurant…

I’m also confident that such responsible practices will help pave the way for other blockchain-based companies. The only way blockchain companies will become widespread is through trust.Self-regulation has become an important part of the blockchain…

Source: Blog - Wavesplatform

Cold Storage: How To Keep Your Blockchain Tokens Really Safe

Source: Blog - Wavesplatform

Cold storage is the practice holding cryptocurrency securely by generating addresses offline — meaning that no hacker can gain access to them. The public key cryptography that underpins all blockchains is extremely strong, meaning that it is impossible for a hacker to steal funds with a brute-force attack: it would take billions of years or more to guess the private key that gives access to a bitcoin address, no matter how powerful the computer used. However, there are many other ways that coins can be stolen, for example when a hacker gains access to a device and is able to copy a wallet file or learn the private key some other way. The only means to guard against this with complete confidence is to generate a crypto address offline, and then to send coins to it. Since the private key is never exposed to the internet,…

Most of these ICOs were selling utility tokens trying satisfy the Howey test and avoid being classified as securities (but still miserably failing the duck test). But not every investment offer can be packaged as a utility token, and this game is becoming increasingly risky, as exemplified by the recent Munchee case. Most countries restrict access to risky investments and make them available only to accredited (qualified) investors. For example, in the US, one can sell unregistered securities under SEC Rule 506(c) if all investors are accredited. So, to go beyond utility tokens and be able to sell securities (security tokens), one…

Proof of Stake

Source: Blog - Wavesplatform

Confirmation rates in the Tangle

Source: Blog - Iota.org

The IOTA consensus mechanism is based on a weighted random walk. Using this tip selection mechanism, large branches of the Tangle become larger and smaller ones become smaller, until they get abandoned. The intuition is quite similar to blockchains: while a blockchain builds upon the longest chain, the Tangle builds upon the heaviest branch.Except it doesn’t, not quite. Instead of always going towards the heaviest branch, some randomness is allowed in the walk, to make sure that lighter branches are occasionally approved. The motivation for this is maintaining a high transaction rate: if only the heaviest branch are approved, the result will be a thin chain of approved transactions, with most others getting left behind. For an illustration of this, try running the visual simulation with a large value of α, and see that most transactions are not confirmed. Remember that…

Stellar Build Challenge #6 – the Results

Stellar Build Challenge #6 – the Results
Source: Blog - Stellar.org

Confusion. Disorder. Darkness. Without form. Without meaning. For unbroken millennia, seemingly forever, all creation is but a roiling emptiness—all existence, void—as the sublime mystery of the unknown and a nameless malevolence combine in absolute nullity. Oblivion holds silent, cruel dominion, and the universe writhes, pathetic in its vacant struggle; timeless, deathless, soulless, loathsome. Then, suddenly, from chaos, order. Behold! Obey! Yes, the 6th Stellar Build Challenge is officially over. Below are your winners. This is a real photo of the judging process. Before we get to the best of the many excellent projects we had the privilege to review, we want to point out that we received more submissions for this SBC than in all previous challenges combined. This is Stellar in microcosm. There’s an order of magnitude more interest in the Network now; and the combined talent applied to…

Bulletproofs and PIVX: An interview with Jonathan Bootle

Bulletproofs and PIVX: An interview with Jonathan Bootle
Source: Blog - Pivx.org

One of our content creators, Robert Devoe (optical88), did a quick Q&A with Jonathan Bootle, one of two cryptographers on our team.  Here’s the outcome of that encounter – Enjoy! Why PIVX? Why did you choose to work with us? I chose to work with PIVX because I thought my skills were a good match for the development team, and I was impressed by the high level of activity and community driven development that I saw. What do you see in PIVX that makes it attractive considering your work? There are a lot of places where zero-knowledge proofs could be incorporated and, I think, lots of scope for cool protocol optimisations. With Bulletproofs added, what will be the major improvement it will bring? Considering other privacy coins how will it set us apart? I think that the largest benefit will…

Privacy is our First Name

Privacy is our First Name
Source: Blog - Pivx.org

Privacy is kind of an odd thing. We tend not to think about it when it’s not an issue, and we always have this assumption that we’re not being watched. Reality, unfortunately, is not nearly that simple. The truth is, we are all being watched and analyzed every day. Big companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple all watch us meticulously under the guise that their actions are benign or solely focused on “improving the user experience”. The world at large just got a sharp slap in its face in the form of the recent Facebook data mining fiasco. So now is the perfect time to talk about why we need privacy to be not just something for the paranoid, but for the average person. But what about those who argue that privacy is only for those engaged in illegal or…
