Waves Development Update — August

Waves Node DevelopmentJune releaseThe previous release, 0.13.x, was actually delivered to MainNet in June and brought several much-requested features like Data Transactions, Fair PoS, Transaction Sponsorship and node state optimisation. All these features are now successfully activated on MainNet.The team implemented these features rather quickly in response to demand, which brought its own drawbacks — specifically a few issues that weren’t caught during the testing phase. Our conclusion is that it’s more important to ensure appropriate product quality and stability than to guarantee an exact release schedule.Igor Pavlov, our new project manager who joined the node team in June, is now in charge of setting up the proper process for upcoming releases. This process includes:Comprehensive test design and test automationProper functional and non-functional testing of release candidate on TestNetPublic bug bounty and third-party auditGradual rollout to MainNet starting with non-mining nodes, official wallet nodes,…

The many faces of the Tangle

A look at different Tangle behaviorThe Tangle is a complex mathematical object. It has a random structure defined by a separate random agent: the random walk. This makes its study challenging, but also very interesting. In order to systematically study the Tangle and its associated problems, we must first understand its structure. This post presents a brief introduction on the different behaviors we expect from the Tangle depending on alpha, the parameter of the random walk, especially considering the number of tips and of stability its structure over time. In this post I assume the reader has knowledge on what is the Tangle, how the random walk is used to select tips and what reattachment is. Alon Gal’s post about alpha and randomness is also recommended.Recurrence and TransienceRecurrence and transience are terms widely used in probability theory. Here I will give some context on…

Xarbon digitizes Carbon Assets through the NEM Blockchain

Xarbon digitizes Carbon Assets through the NEM Blockchain
Source: Blog - Nem.io

Laying the backdrop: Carbon assets, a new commodity Before going through the discussion of digitizing carbon assets, let us take a step back to explain how this new commodity came about. In 1997, an agreement was made under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that called the commitment of countries to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases (GHG), or engage in emissions trading if they maintain or increase emissions of these gases. This agreement is called the Kyoto Protocol. Countries that have committed to the Kyoto Protocol have accepted the set targets for limiting or reducing emissions. One feature of this landmark agreement, as set out in Article 17 of the Kyoto Protocol, is to allow countries to engage in emissions trading. Emissions trading is an economic activity in which countries that…

Golem’s mid-term goals — in detail

Source: Blog - Golemproject.net

Scroll down to find the recording of yesterday’s livestream!Building Golem is an incredibly rewarding experience, we learn new things every day, but at the same time, constructing something that has never been done before is unpredictable and tricky.Launching Brass Beta into mainnet, for instance, was not envisioned in our first plan. But we understood that in order to progress, we needed to go out of our comfort zone — that is, obviously, testnet and the lab environment, and see how Golem behaves in the wilderness of mainnet. Now that we accomplished this, that we introduced 2 major updates after that first Brass Beta mainnet launch and a couple of patches, we sat down with our ever-growing team and planned differently. We are not reinventing the wheel but dismantling it and tracking the progress of each piece, while we never stop working and progressing, sticking to…

Development Update — Road to Core 1.0 Mainnet: August 2, 2018

Source: Blog - Lisk.io

Hello Lisk Community!Over the past week, the Lightcurve Development team has mainly been working on QA (quality assurance) for Lisk Core 1.0.0-rc.2. This is the most crucial process prior to the release to Mainnet, therefore we are making sure to take our time to ensure with utmost precision the stability of the product. We are also still communicating with many exchanges that will need to properly migrate to Lisk Core 1.0.0.Lisk Core 1.0.0-rc.2:We have continued testing the second release candidate for Lisk Core 1.0.0, performing several intensive rounds of QA. In the process, we have been able to identify several issues that required fixing before the actual release.Issue #2199 — The logic of the isValid function that is responsible for validating the blocks’ version property was not correct. The function was returning an invalid result when the blockVersions object in the exceptions file contained…

Sia Community Update — July 2018

Source: Blog - Sia.tech

We’re opening up the second half of the year with some big moves on the dev side and the support side of the Sia network. We’ve got a new home for our code, new features deployed and better ones on the way, and lots of great ways to get help with Sia.I’ve been known to ramble every now and then, so I’ve tried to condense our topics a bit and provide links to expanded info when relevant. Read on!In this updateOur move to GitLabDeveloper’s CornerSia v1.3.4Support CenterThe Exchange SituationBy the numbersOur move to GitLabThis month we finalized the transfer of Sia development from GitHub to GitLab. While Microsoft’s acquisition of GitHub factored into our decision, GitLab has shown a committment to open source, self-hosting, and maintaining a wonderful ecosystem of features that will be the foundation upon which we build Sia for years to come.Sia lead dev…

An overview of WebId’s and RDF data use on SAFE.

An overview of WebId’s and RDF data use on SAFE.
Source: Blog - Maidsafe.net

An example of using WebIds and linked dataRecently we published some proof of concepts (POCs) showcasing the use of semantic data on The SAFE Network. We’ve taken the idea of using WebIds for online identity management and applied it to The SAFE Network. This has showcased not only how self-authentication can simplify a lot of problems thrown up by the clearnet (see authentication below). But also how SAFE can lend itself to zero infrastructure app development, allowing anyone to easily build decentralized apps, that scale. Here we’ll be talking through some of the data structures on SAFE that provide for our WebId POC.What this means is that via a url only, you can easily identify yourself on the network to applications, and provide information to those applications about yourself (like, eg… where your inbox is). Now with this WebId setup, we’re using a standard RDF data setup and FOAF read…

PIVX – A Love Story

PIVX – A Love Story
Source: Blog - Pivx.org

What seems like nearly a decade ago now, I heard about Bitcoin from friends. Initially, I was only vaguely curious but didn’t spend any time reading up on Bitcoin nor even considered investing back then. Over the following few years, I started hearing more and more about Bitcoin and eventually about the mysterious “cryptocurrencies”. It wasn’t until mid-2016 that I finally got curious enough to buy my first BTC through an exchange in my country, which made the process very easy. Through that exchange, I traded on and off for several months, mostly testing the waters and learning how cryptocurrencies worked. Most of this was done on my own, with little outside support or guidance, and through lots of trial and error. As one can imagine, that meant lots and lots of losses! Fast forward again to the start of…

Swarm Orange Summit 2018

Source: Blog - Status.im

This year Jacek Sieka and Boris Petrov from the Status team had the privilege of attending the Swarm Orange Summit. Every year the Swarm Orange Summit is a chance for the Swarm core team to come together and interact face to face for hacking and discussions, and it is a chance for the wider Community and the core team to interact. The summit was in Ljubljana, hosted and co-organised by DataFund. We were invited to attend the three days of talks and discussion, a hacking day and a wonderful Slovenia day-trip. It was a very social event with communal lunches and dinners and debates late into the night; with friends new and old. This Summit was the first time the Swarm team presented the new Swarm v0.3, and launched a dedicated testnet for this purpose. It saw a refined PSS protocol that…

Introducing Nimbus

Source: Blog - Status.im

An Ethereum 2.0 Sharding ClientStatus’ goal is to drive mass adoption of EthereumIn order to do this, we have had to play an active part in the development of the ecosystem at many levels: from improving Whisper, to working on Light Clients, to doing UX research and studies about the best patterns for easy and intuitive use of web3. Much like many other projects now on Mainnet, the next big issue we have to tackle is scalability of the network itself. In order to advance the collective work on scaling Ethereum, we have been building our own client, called Nimbus, which has a particular focus on sharding. Nimbus is written in a language called Nim, which offers us various unique features capable of handling both the complex computations required, while ensuring they can still happen on resource-restricted devices.Sharding, Plasma, STARKs, better signature aggregation — all of…

The SAFE Network Release Cycle

The SAFE Network Release Cycle
Source: Blog - Maidsafe.net

As you may have gathered from the even greater amount of activity on GitHub (I didn’t think it was possible either) the core of the SAFE Network has been getting tested both internally and externally as we get ever closer to a stable decentralised network. While details about the team’s development progress continue to flow via the forum, the purpose of this post is to establish the main phases of the impending and iterative release process. There are:Alpha — the core network and fundamental functionality is provided via an initial implementation, this is the first public testing phase.Beta — alpha implementations are reiterated and improved, based on user feedback.Release candidate — the fundamental feature set is stabilised to provide greater security, resilience and efficiency.Release — privacy, security, freedom! The speed at which MaidSafe will iterate through the alpha testing phase is unknown and will be dependent upon how well the network…

Stable Droplet Network

Stable Droplet Network
Source: Blog - Maidsafe.net

News For App DevelopersIn the pretty aggressive recent networking tests though we left app developers a little behind. There was no secure way they could use the APIs and get more involved in the RFC / API process for applications (surely one of the most important aspects of SAFE). To improve matters, there we are splitting continuing tests into Vault tests and Client tests. We will continue at least one more vault test soon, but in the meantime we will run a stable network on the Digital Ocean droplets, starting from today. This client test network will not be to test anything to do with vaults and be reserved for app developers to work against something stable. Please download the launcher here and the demo app hereUpdates for launcher include :Updated logs to provide more useful information.Fixes for self encryption crashing apps on…
